Five Tips For GREAT
Smoothies Everytime!
Before you dive in and check out all the
awesome recipes for delicious, healthy smoothies... here are a
few tips to help your smoothies recipes turn into a fantastic
and healthy experience.
Smoothies Tip #1: Whenever
possible, use freshly made juice (using a juicer) for recipes
that call for either vegetable and/or fruit juices. You will
dramatically increase the healthy benefits fresh juice can
deliver and you will notice a boost in overall taste.
Smoothies Tip #2: For fruit
ingredients that tend to be very mushy when blending, try
freezing them the night before, then adding them to your
smoothies recipe the next day. This works particularly well for
peeled and sliced bananas.
Smoothies Tip #3: Taking your
smoothie on the road? Keep it cold by prechilling your
container in the freezer for 30 minutes.
Smoothies Tip #4: Some
smoothies recipes may turn out too thick for your liking.
Simply add pure ice water to thin.
Smoothies Tip #5: Whenever you
see dairy products (ie. milk, yoghurt, etc.) use the low-fat
version. Also note, most can be substituted with soy-based
products and/or tofu (in some cases). Experiment!
Top 5 Fruit Smoothies
Recipes
With so many delicious smoothies
recipes to choose from, it was difficult to come up with
only 5 to put on our Top 5 list. But here we go, in no specific
order, the smoothies recipes we love in our family. We hope you
enjoy them as much as we do!
SMOOTHIES RECIPE #1: Strawberry-Kiwi
Kick!
-
1/2 cup fresh strawberries, chopped
-
2 or 3 kiwi, peeled and chopped
-
1 banana, peeled and sliced
-
1 small container low-fat strawberry yoghurt
-
Apple Juice (to thin to
preferred consistency and for added
flavor)
The kiwi adds a tropical kick to this one. We
also sometimes toss in fresh (soft) pineapple chunks now and
then, when available and in season, for an extra tropical
punch.
SMOOTHIES RECIPE #2: Blueberry Pudding
Smoothie
-
2 cups vanilla flavored soy milk*
-
3 small bananas peeled, sliced and frozen
-
1 cup blueberries, frozen
-
1 cup low-fat vanilla yoghurt
*We sometimes substitute vanilla flavored soy
milk with vanilla ice cream which makes more of a milk shake
than a smoothie. Also, this recipe can be quite thick. You may
need to help your blender along. It can be thinned by
increasing soy milk and/or other low fat milk. You'll be
surprised how "soothing" this recipe can feel.
SMOOTHIES RECIPE #3: High-C Melon
Smoothie
-
3 cups watermelon, chunked, skin/rind removed
-
1 cup canteloupe, chunked, rind removed
-
1/2 cup fresh strawberries, chopped
-
1 cup low-fat plain yoghurt
-
2 cups ice
This recipe is incredibly high in Vitamin C...
great for immune system and/or energy boost, and you'll love
the added fiber value, too!
SMOOTHIES RECIPE #4: Pineapple Honey
Smoothie
-
2 cups low-fat/nonfat milk
-
2 bananas, peeled, chunked and frozen
-
6 slices pineapple (canned pineapple works best)
-
1 tablespoon honey
This is a great recipe when your favorite
fruits are not in season because canned pineapple actually
works best. Try it and see if you agree.
SMOOTHIES RECIPE #5: Cherry Vanilla
Smoothie
-
1 cup cherries, pitted, frozen
-
1/2 cup fresh cherry juice*
-
1 cup vanilla ice cream
For this recipe, we juice our own cherry
juice but any cherry blend juice works well. Also, you
want to puree the frozen cherries first before slowly adding
the remaining ingredients. Our son likes adding milk chocolate
bits to this one, too.
