You Might Be Drinking It ...But Are You Fully Absorbing The Benefits?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 29 2005

Did you know that 3 major pairs of salivary glands produce the majority of saliva (1-1.5 lts/day ), enzymes and mucus of the oral cavity?

Those glands are:
1. THE PAROTID
2. THE SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND
3. THE SUBLINGUAL GLAND

Here's a quick look at what they are and do.

THE PAROTID

• largest salivary gland
• located in front of the ear, between the skin and masseter muscle
• secretion is a clear watery fluid, it contains the digestive enzyme SALIVARY AMYLASE

THE SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND

• located under the mandible
• secretions are thicker because of the presence of mucin ( help to keep food in a “bolus” for swallowing )
• the duct opens near the lingual frenulum

THE SUBLINGUAL GLAND

• located under the tongue
• saliva is secreted into numerous lesser sublingual ducts along the base of the tongue
• it is prmarily a mucous gland

There are also four principal groups of smaller salivary glands in the mouth:

1. PALATINE GLANDS
2. LINGUAL GLANDS
3. BUCCAL GLANDS
4. LABIAL GLANDS

Now the reason I bring this up is...

I've been told that if you would like to significantly increase the health benefits of the nutrients and master molecules in Goji Juice, it is highly recommend holding it under the tongue before swallowing each ounce.

Why?

In a lecture titled "Sublingual Absorption" by Leilani Lea from the University of Sunderland, Dept Pharmacology, UK describes what happens this way:

"Sublingual, meaning literally 'under the tongue' refers to a method of administering substances via the mouth in such a way that the substances are rapidly absorbed via the blood vessels under the tongue rather than via the digestive tract. The route of absorption via the highly vascularixed buccal mucosa allow the substances a more direct access to the blood circulation, thus providing direct systemic administration.

Medically, sublingual drug administration is applied in the field of cardocascular drugs, steroids, some barbiturates and enzymes. It has been a developing field in the administration of many vitamins and minerals which are found to be readily and thoroughly absorbed by this method. Sublingually absorbed nutrition, which avoids exposure to the gastric system and liver, means direct nutritional benefits, particularly important for sufferers of gastro-intestinal difficulties such as ulcers, hyperactive gut, coeliac disease, those with compromised digestion, the elderly and invalids - the nutritional benefit is independent of gastro-intestinal influences."

The lecture also goes on to state more benefits of sublingual absorption...

"The advantages of sublingually administering nutrients seem to be manifold, offering improved bioavailability and more rapid metabolisation of the nutrients which are absorbed more fully."

Now, I have to admit, holding the Goji Juice under my tongue for any length of time is difficult for me... it just tastes too darn good and goes down quick. I can't even enjoy orange juice anymore after a year of drinking Goji Juice. Orange juice is now too harsh to my senses - imagine that.

And yet, I do my best to hold Goji Juice under my tongue for at least a few seconds before swallowing. And yes... I am noticing even more differences since acquiring this habit. I'll tell you more about those differences in a future update.

Before closing this short article I would like to caution you... don't think that just because a vitamin or supplement product is in liquid form it will be better for you. Not all supplements and vitamins are created equal in quality, and believe it or not, some vitamins definitely SHOULD BE in pill form and go through the natural digestive process in order to do any good for you at all.

So, don't buy into the hype that has been coming out in recent months about spray vitamins and other liquid supplements.

All I'm saying is, if you want to boost the effects Goji Juice is already delivering... try increasing the absorption a bit. You might be pleasantly surprised!

7 Tips About Ticks And Lyme Disease You Should Know

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 29 2005

Tip 1
Despite what you may have heard, deer ticks are not the only carriers of Lyme disease; mosquitoes, fleas, mites and gnats are also carriers.

Tip 2
A tick that carries lyme disease may prompt a bulls-eye rash, but this infamous rash shape appears in fewer than half of all cases of the disease. This is just one of the reasons why Lyme disease is so difficult to diagnose.

Tip 3
Some aromas that will repel ticks and other bugs include lavender essential oil, citronella, cedar oil, rose geranium oil, American pennyroyal oil (also called tickweed), eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil. (If you are searching for a good source of essential oils, contact us. We'd be happy to help.)

Tip 4
We've also heard that eating garlic or taking garlic pills will help keep ticks away. A garlic regimen may repel ticks, but it may also repel your friends and loved ones.

Tip 5
The Center For Disease Control claims on their website that many local health departments, parks, and cooperative extension services have information about the areas most infested with ticks. If you are in a tick-infested area, walk in the center of the trails to avoid contact with vegetation. Wear light-colored clothing, which allows you to see ticks that are crawling on your clothing. Tuck your pant legs into your socks so that ticks cannot crawl up inside of your pant legs. Always check yourself and your children for ticks after being outdoors, even in your own yard.

Tip 6
Some of the more common diseases that you can get from a tick bite include: babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, Q-fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Southern tick-associated rash illness, tick-borne relapsing fever and tularemia. Other diseases that you can get from a tick in the United States include anaplasmosis, Colorado tick fever, and Powassan encephalitis. Early tick removal may reduce the risk of infection of some tick-borne diseases.

Tip 7
If you come down with flu symptoms in the summertime, that's a red flag for Lyme disease and you should see a doctor immediately. Other symptoms include unusual joint and muscle pain, stiff neck, confusion, severe headaches and heart palpitations.

Have a safe and tick-free summer!

Dairy And Weight-Loss Controversy

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 29 2005

A recent study carried out by scientists from Purdue University concluded that increased consumption of dairy calcium was not associated with reduced weight and fat mass, as had been suggested by previous results.

The researchers came to this conclusion after following 155 women aged 18-30 for one year. They found that those who ate the most dairy – the equivalent of three to four glasses of milk per day - were no more likely to gain or lose weight than people who took in no more than the equivalent of one glass of milk per day.

Amy Lanou, senior nutrition scientist for Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine states "The overwhelming weight of scientific evidence confirms that dairy products either cause weight gain or, at best, have no effect on weight whatsoever. Since 1989 there have been 35 clinical trials that have explored the relationship between dairy products and/or calcium supplements and body weight. Thirty-one found no relation; two indicated that milk and other dairy products actually contributed to weight gain."

One More Reason To Add Fruits And Veggies To Your Day

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 29 2005

Jess Halliday of NutriIngredientsUSA writes "The vitamin A in carrots has long been believed to aid night vision, but new research from Harvard Medical Center indicates that the whole spectrum of fruit and vegetables could help preserve sight by reducing the risk of developing cataracts by 10 to 15 percent."

Rather than focusing on individual nutrients, serum concentrations of nutrients or biomarkers of fruit and vegetable intake, as other studies have done with mixed results, the Harvard researchers, led by Dr William Christen, decided to look at the development of cataract in relation to specific foods or food groups, such as fruit and vegetables.

"This approach enables an assessment of the combined effects of antioxidant nutrients together with the effects of other components in the diet, such as other micronutrients, phytochemicals and fiber," they wrote in the American Journal for Clinical Nutrition (2005; 81: 1417-22).

For the purpose of the Harvard study, cataracts that were responsible for a decrease in best-corrected visual acuity to 20/30, in the opinion of an ophthalmologist or optometrist, were counted. The specialist also had to verify that the cataract was age-related in origin.

The study was carried out using data supplied by 39,876 apparently healthy female health professionals aged over 45, who were involved in the Women’s Health Study.

The participants were asked to complete a semi-quantitive food frequency questionnaire that asked how often, on average, they had eaten each of 29 different vegetables and 15 fruits over the last year. Responses were converted to average daily intakes for each item for each participant.

Once women with existing cataract at baseline and those whose daily calorie intake was less than 600 or more than 3500 were excluded, 35,724 participants were deemed eligible for the study.

Over a ten-year period, a total of 2,067 cases of incident cataract were confirmed amongst the participants, and 1,315 cases of removal. Women in the highest quintile of fruit and vegetable consumption were seen to have a 15 to 20 percent reduced risk of developing cataract, compared with those in the lowest quintile.

The researchers considered this reduced risk to be only sight, and said that additional observational studies and dietary supplement trials may identify specific components in the diet that reduce cataract formation.

But they wrote: “The possible beneficial effects of fruit and vegetables on the risk of many chronic diseases, including cataract, have a strong biological basis and warrant the continued recommendation to increase total intakes of fruit and vegetables.”

A study published last year in the Archives of Ophthalmology (122:883-9214) also established a link between fruit and vegetable consumption and a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a degenerative eye condition that is the leading cause of vision loss in over-55s in the United States, affecting more than 10 million people.

Here at Best Liquid Vitamins we have been saying for the longest time that there is so much more in whole-food nutrition sources that deserves closer study ...and we're happy to see natural sciences evolving toward this.

When we drink Goji Juice, we like knowing that we are getting the full spectrum of nutrients from this powerful berry --- including its rich range of phytochemicals and micronutrients, such as Beta-Sitosterol, Solavetivone, Physalin, Betaine, Zeaxanthin and so very much more ... not just the master molecules it is quickly becoming famous for, namely LBP1, LBP2, LBP3 and LBP4.

It's also comforting to know when we drink Goji Juice, we're getting the FULL health benefits of the berry as nature intended --- an all-natural source of nature's most beneficial nutrients.

Do you realize we would have to eat 5 times the amount of oranges in order to get the same amount of Vitamin C by weight that we get from goji berries?

I wonder how much non-pasteurized Orange Juice we would have to drink to get the same amount? I'll have to check that out...

Meanwhile, we've said it before, and we'll say it again --- we believe the Best Liquid Vitamins come from all-natural whole food sources.

Add more fruits and veggies to your day... or at the very least, add non-pasteurized whole-food sources of it in the form of highly nutritious drinks such as Goji Juice. Convenient AND delicious!

Enjoy!

What Is The Major Cause Of Food Recalls In The USA?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 29 2005

According to FoodUSA ...the major reason most food is recalled in the USA is owing to undeclared ingredients. Our emailed version of "BLV Health Watch" will bring you more details on which foods have been recalled in recent months... meanwhile, the question remains:

Are we really getting what we see on the label?

Or, are we getting something we didn't want or expect?

It's not only what's on the insde that counts. It's also what's on the outside that counts, too --- meaning the label.

With the many allergies floating around the world today, from peanut allergies to bee pollen, the tiny ingredient list on every label has dramatically risen in importance.

One would think Food Industry Giants such as those who will be appearing in our month-end wrap-up would take better care in the packaging/labelling process.

We can only hope things will improve in future...

Be sure to subscribe to BLV News to get our latest emailed version.

Until then... have a super month ahead!

Sidenote: We'll be bringing a feature article to BLV in July that will others understand food product labels and what to look for when making purchase decisions.

Why The Sudden Increase In Diet Candy?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 29 2005

According to "Market Trends: Diet Candy" (a new report from market research firm Packaged Facts), the diet candy market quadrupled in two years.

FoodUSA reported, "Sales of diet candy more than quadrupled between 2000 and 2004, fueled by better-tasting products, improved formulations and heightened concern over weight gain in adults and children."

Launches of reduced-sugar products have nearly tripled since 1999.

The market is currently divided essentially between non-nutritive sweeteners, which have no caloric value but hundreds of times the sweetness of sugar; and nutritive, or reduced-calorie sweeteners, which have fewer calories and a slower rate of absorption than sugar, along with a milder sweet taste.

Into the first group fall products such as saccharin, sucralose, aspartame, and acesulfame-K, all of them FDA approved and available both as branded tabletop sweeteners and as ingredients, especially in diet drinks.

The second group, also known as polyols, provide the same bulk as sugar but are sugar free, do not promote tooth decay, and are used in a wide range of foods including chewing gum, candies, ice cream, baked goods, and fruit spreads.

And there are new sweeteners on the horizon. These include dihydrochalcones, derived from citrus fruits; glycyrrhizin, a non-caloric extract of licorice root and thaumatin, a mixture of proteins from a West African fruit.

Awaiting approval in the United States are cyclamate, banned here in 1970 as a potential carcinogen but currently accepted for use in 50 countries; and alitame, an amino acid derivative. According to Packaged Facts, all of these products are many times sweeter than sucrose.

Personally, I just hate the thought of all those empty calories and heaven-only-knows-what-else going into my youngster's tummy regardless what kind of candy he wants to chew.

I wish they would stick to research on how to make healthy nutritious treats better, instead of finding ways to make junk food more appealing, don't you?

More TV = Nutritionally Confused Kids?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 22 2005

A new report has found that the more television kids watch, the more confused they are about which foods are - and which aren't - going to help them grow up strong and healthy.

For the study, 134 children in the first through third grades were asked to respond to a questionnaire that measured their nutritional knowledge, nutritional reasoning and television viewing. The children displayed moderate nutritional reasoning, but this decreased with heavier TV viewing, especially for the choices involving fat-free and diet labels.

"Thus, television in general seems to be a source of nutritional misinformation, and children's exposure to television in general may increase their risk of becoming misinformed food consumers," said Kristen Harrison, professor of speech communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and author of the report.

Harrison claims that the problem with TV advertising is that it intentionally blurs the lines between diet and nutritional foods by "equating weight-loss benefits with nutritional benefits."

"So many diet ads and foods are framed as being healthy for an adult that needs to lose weight, but would be unhealthy for a kid who needs to build up muscles and doesn’t need food that is nutritionally void."

"To me, even more frightening is the fact that 16 percent of the children in this country are obese," said Dr Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"That number has increased by at least two times over the last 20 years."

Another worrying fact is that Type II Diabetes, which used to be known as adult onset diabetes, is now increasingly being diagnosed in kids, adding to the cardiovascular risk profile of children.

"We have many children now who are not only overweight, but they also have high blood pressure, lipid abnormalities, and diabetes - all of the factors that increase the risk among adults for cardiovascular disease and stroke."

Obesity is now a mainstream issue and a serious concern, and Harrison believes that better nutritional awareness is vital to counter the corrosive influence that TV advertising is having on young diets. She applauds efforts to make foods healthier for kids.

What's The Biggest Source Of Calories In The Diet?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 22 2005

In a recent study at Tufts University, 67 percent of respondents reported drinking as much as three servings of soda or sweet drinks each day, making them the single biggest source of calories in the diet.

If you're looking for empty calories that add weight, grab a bottle ...or a can... of that soda or sweet drink.

If you're looking for all-natural energy with a sweet drink made from a berry clinically proven to aid in weight loss, grab an ice cold glass of Goji Juice instead.

Food Makers Under Scrutiny

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 22 2005

Food makers are increasingly coming under scrutiny for inaccurate labeling as consumers become increasingly conscious about issues such as health, nutrition and obesity.

For example, according to the National Honey Board (NHB), virtually all consumers, when presented with a product with the word honey in its name, expect the product to not only actually contain honey, but also use honey as the primary sweetener. However, numerous products containing the word honey in their names not only do not have honey as the primary sweetener, but they may not use honey at all.

Food companies not only face fines and censure if they label inaccurately; they face losing the substantial consumer trust that has been built up. This is especially true in today's health conscious climate.

Now do you see why we add the Spectral Signature Seal to our Himalayan Goji Juice? Ask Dr. Mindell and he will tell you himself that every single berry is screened before going into the making of our Goji Juice. In fact, we reject more goji berries than we accept. If a berry doesn't have the full optimum spectral signature for the original lycium barbarum bloodline that has been treasured by Tibetan healers for centuries, then it simply doesn't get in the bottle.

If you're settling for something less, you just might be buying rejected berries that cannot compete for overall health benefits - period.

In another example... let's take a look at soy.

Did you know that the WTO ruling on a complaint filed by the United States, Canada and Argentina contesting what they claim is the EU's moratorium on approvals of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been put off until October? Why is this even a concern when it comes to soy?

There's a very good reason we use Non-GMO (Non-Genetically Modified Organism) soybeans in our Soy Miracle Ultimate Shakes. Non-GMO soybeans are the most natural type of soybeans because they are produced under the strict Certified Identity Preservation Program to ensure that they are not genetically engineered at any stage. From harvest to production, these soybeans are 100% certified natural! I'll be telling you more about this in a future article here at BLV Health Watch.

Does it cost a little bit more to ensure any product has nothing but the best? In all honesty, yes... but if you care about what you are putting into your body, and what it is doing at the cellular level, it makes sense to get nothing but the best whenever possible.

California Group Threatens Lawsuit For Acrylamide Warning Labels

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 22 2005

California's anti-toxics law, Proposition 65, requires companies to warn consumers about products containing chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects.

Acrylamide, a carcinogen that is created when starchy foods are baked, roasted, fried or toasted, was placed on the list in 1990.

But according to the California-based Environmental Law Foundation, dozens of potato chips contain excessive levels of acrylamide without any warning whatsoever. For every product they tested, a one-ounce serving eaten daily exceeded levels that require a cancer warning under Proposition 65.

In fact one variety, Cape Cod Robust Russet, contained 6.5 parts per million, which is 910 times more acrylamide than the level that the state's environmental health agency has determined poses an unacceptable risk. That, they say, is almost twice as much as the second-highest level, reported for Kettle Chips Lightly Salted.

And they have threatened to sue food manufacturers unless they place acrylamide warning labels on certain products.

Many food processors are demanding an exemption from the labelling law, which the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), is now considering.

According to one source: "The food industry is terrified about consumer reaction. But there is a precedent. Seafood has warnings about mercury levels, and this hasn't led to drastic decline."

James Wheaton, president of the Environmental Law Foundation, told the LA Times that there was "no excuse" for the lack of warning labels on potato chip bags. Many processed foods contain acrylamide, Wheaton said, but "the problem, as we see it, is with foods that have exceptionally high levels."

Corn chips, popcorn, tortilla chips and other snacks also contain acrylamide but not at levels as high as French fries and potato chips, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA is investigating acrylamide in various foods, including bread, cereal and coffee, but has not issued any warnings. A list from March 2004 shows the acrylamide levels - in parts per billion - of many brands of food. This list can be found here.

One news report published a suggested warning developed by state Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment for foods containing acrylamide...

Warning: Baking, roasting, frying and toasting starchy foods forms acrylamide, a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer.

New UK Study Suggests Obesity Accelerates Aging Process of Cells

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 15 2005

It's well known that smoking can decrease your life span. Many studies have been completed to verify the harm smoking can cause to health.

But its only in recent years that clinical research has turned its attention to obesity and aging.

A new UK study published Tuesday June 13, 2005 in the online version of The Lancet indicates that... in addition to increased risk of health conditions including heart disease, hypertension and respiratory disease... obesity also causes accelerated aging at a molecular level.

Dr Tim Spector of St Thomas' Hospital in the UK set out to test the hypothesis that increased body mass and smoking – both of which are known to heighten oxidative stress – are connected to shortened telomere length in white blood cells.

Telomeres are sequences of DNA that cap the ends of chromosomes in cells and protect them from damage. The shortening of telomeres is a process that occurs naturally with aging, every time a cell divides. But oxidative stress is known to increase the erosion of telomeres with each replication.

For the study, Dr Spector's team recruited 1122 white women aged between 18 and 76 years. Of these, 119 had a BMI of over 30 and 85 had a BMI of under 20. In a questionnaire about their smoking habits, 203 said they were current smokers, 369 were ex-smokers and 531 had never smoked.

The mean rate of telomere length decrease across all the participants was 27 bp per year. But the telomeres of the obese women were seen to be 240 bp shorter than those of lean women, making them more than nine years ‘older’ in biological terms.

Using a dose dependent measure dubbed the ‘pack year’ – that is, cigarette packs smoked per day multiplied by the number of years smoking – the researchers noted that each pack-year was associated with 5 bp more telomere length lost.

“Our results emphasize the pro-aging effects of obesity and cigarette smoking,” concluded the researchers.

Trans-fats In The Headlines Again

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Tuesday, June 14 2005

Remember the McDonald's lawsuit we wrote about a few months ago? Well... it appears the trans-fat headlines are growing, not diminishing...

Recent trans-fat testing for accurate labelling on Florida foods found that only one food product out of 33 tested for trans fat levels in the state of Florida was accurately labeled.

"Consumers must be able to rely on the accuracy of food labels," said Florida agriculture and consumer services commissioner Charles Bronson. "Inaccurate labels can endanger people's health."

The only exception was a vegetable oil spread, or margarine, produced by Olivio Premium Products of Boston.

Trans fat is formed when liquid oils are made into solid fats like shortening and hard margarine, a process that increases the shelf life and flavor stability of foods. But the substance has been found to contribute to elevated cholesterol levels and can lead to coronary artery disease.

Some of our customers already know we carry natural products that may help dramatically reduce cholesterol levels, and several products beneficial for the heart. If either are a concern for you, be sure to contact us for further details.

We'll bring you more updates on the trans-fat issue soon!

Some Bad Florida Basil Triggers An FDA Traceback

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Tuesday, June 14 2005

The following report appeared on FoodQualityNews.com:

08/06/2005 - Fresh basil, the most probable source of an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness in Florida earlier this year, is now the target of an FDA traceback operation.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is determined to identify the source of several clusters of gastrointestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis that occurred in the state during mid-March through mid-April.

The investigation began last week after the Florida Department of Health's epidemiological investigation implicated fresh basil as the source of the illness. Most cases were reported on the west coast and central areas.

"FDA is aggressively working with our federal and state partners to determine the source of the contaminated product and taking appropriate action to protect the public," said Dr. Robert Brackett, director of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

It is not known how this outbreak will effect Florida’s burgeoning basil sector. There has been a dramatic increase in herb production in Florida in the last decade, from virtually none in 1991 to nearly 17 acres by 2001.

Herbs now rank third in greenhouse food crops, accounting for 18 percent of the state’s greenhouse acreage, with the major herb being basil. Fresh-cut herbs grown in Florida account for over $1 million in sales, and the demand for fresh-cut herbs is expected to increase in part due to health-conscious consumers and increasing consumption of ethnic cuisine.

The FDA has been swift in its implementation of traceback since the identification of basil as the probable source of the outbreak. Since the passage of the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness Act, the agency has unprecedented authority over domestic and imported food products.

All food facilities are required to register with the FDA. In addition, the FDA requires all food facilities to maintain records to allow the agency to identify the immediate previous sources and the immediate subsequent recipients of food products.

The agency says that the speed at which these “one-step forward, one-step back” records can be accessed in case of potential food contamination is critical in diminishing the impact on consumers.

If companies are unable to trace and isolate the source of a possible food contamination problem within 24 to 48 hours, the potential of serious damage increases exponentially. The FDA is therefore determined to push through with great rapidity its traceback operation in Florida.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the ingestion of the Cyclospora parasite and results in the infection of the small intestine. It causes watery diarrhea with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements.

Other symptoms include loss of appetite, substantial weight loss, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, low-grade fever and fatigue. Symptoms usually develop about a week after consuming the contaminated food. Cyclospora infection can be treated with appropriate antibiotic therapy. Individuals experiencing these symptoms after consuming basil products are advised to consult their physicians and notify their local health departments.

They Laughed When They Heard About Soy Protiens 9 Years Ago But They're Certainly Not Laughing Now!

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, June 3 2005

A little over 9 years ago when Dr. Earl Mindell first talked about the amazing benefits of Non-GMO (Non-Genetically Modified Organism) soybeans, some experts actually laughed at the idea that soy could be as beneficial to the human body as he claimed.

They're not laughing now. In fact, news of the benefits of soy have swept across our nation and stepped from the supplement arena fully into the mainstream.

And not just our nation recognizes its value...

Soy proteins, traditionally formulated in rival products to dairy-based foods, are now being added to regular yoghurts to reach mainstream consumers in France.

Leading yoghurt brand Yoplait introduced its Bioplait yoghurt to the French market, its first, during April and it is now available in most French multiples.
It came at the same time as Danone rolled out its Bio Soya, already available in Spain for two years, in its home market.

But the Yoplait product is the first in France to combine soy and dairy proteins, offering benefits to both sectors. The yoghurt brand can make additional health claims on the product – Bioplait markets the cholesterol-lowering effect of soy and overall benefit for the heart on product packaging and TV advertising – while the soy protein supplier Solae, whose brand also features on the product, reaches a wider consumer base than the dedicated health food buyer.

Our own Soy Miracle Ultimate® Shakes are the ultimate all-natural source of soy, total nutrition and energy! Soy Miracle Ultimate® Shakes help you:

• Keep your heart healthy and reduce your risk of coronary heart disease

• Gain a pure and natural isoflavone effect with Non-GMO (Non-Genetically Modified Organism) soybeans

• Stay energized with Dahlulin™, a complex carbohydrate, which maintains stable blood sugar

• Support the health of your entire body with 100% of the Daily Value of all essential vitamins and most minerals

• AND Enhances your body's ability to absorb nutrients

Utilizing 30 years of study and 9 trips to Japan, Dr. Mindell developed the revolutionary Ultra Soy Complex®, his exclusive blend of the most powerful components of the soybean.

The key to these formulations is the special ingredients derived from the highest quality soybeans from around the world synergistically combined in the exact ratio necessary for optimum benefit to the body.

Why do we use Non-GMO soybeans?

Non-GMO soybeans are the most natural type of soybeans because they are produced under the strict Certified Identity Preservation Program to ensure that they are not genetically engineered at any stage. From harvest to production, these soybeans are 100% certified natural!

The Soy Miracle Ultimate® Shakes were specially designed to be a great-tasting source of many important nutrients needed to achieve optimal health. The Soy Miracle Ultimate® Shakes can be used as complete meal replacements or healthy snacks that provide 100% of the Daily Value of 12 essential vitamins along with a complete profile of essential minerals and nutrient cofactors.

My message to those so-called experts who laughed in the past: "It must be pretty hard to eat crow with egg on your face."

By the way, neither the crow nor the egg will give you the same benefits our Soy Miracle Ultimate® Shakes can deliver.

Keep smiling!!

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, June 3 2005

Last month the American Dietetic Association journal contained a review of 47 articles investigating links between breakfast, nutrition, body weight and academic or cognitive function.

Although individual study results were inconsistent, overall it found that

- breakfast consumption may be associated with more healthful body weights in children and adolescents;

- that skipping breakfast is common in overweight or obese children, and may be related to dieting or eating disorders;

- that those who don't eat breakfast are less likely to engage in physical activity, resulting in positive energy balance and weight gain;

- and that breakfast consumption may positively affect cognitive function.

"To maximize the potential benefits of breakfast consumption, it is important to distinguish between simply promoting breakfast vs the consumption of a healthful breakfast," wrote the review authors. "Breakfast should include a variety of healthful foods that are high in nutritive value yet do not provide excess energy."

Read into the above statement - avoid sugars.

In what was the first clinical trial tracking the effects of calcium on bone density in girls aged eight to 13 for as long as seven years, Velimir Matkovic, lead author of the study published in January's issues of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of Nutrition, found that calcium supplementation significantly increased bone mass development during a critical childhood growth spurt, particularly for female children.

After the onset of menstruation, calcium supplementation's effects on bone density decreased.

"Because most bone mass is accumulated during this phase of growth, pre-adolescence may represent the time of highest need for calcium in a female’s lifetime," said Matkovic

Bottom Line: don't let your kids skip breakfast.

New Estrogen Research - Have Your Genes Been Accidentally Reprogrammed?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, June 1 2005

New research shows that exposure to harmful chemicals and drugs during critical developmental periods early in life may actually "reprogram" the way certain genes respond to the female hormone estrogen. This genetic reprogramming may determine whether people with a genetic predisposition for a disease actually develop the disease.

The new research shows that when rats with a genetic predisposition to uterine tumors also receive an early-life exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic form of estrogen linked to vaginal cancer, the incidence of uterine tumors rises to almost 100 percent. By comparison, slightly more than half of the unexposed animals, those having only the genetic defect, developed the uterine tumors.
