Why Are Scientists So Amazed By The Himalayan Goji Berry?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Sunday, May 30 2004

If you haven't had a chance yet to hear the audio clips we have on our site regarding the original Himalayan goji berry referred to in ancient Asian Health resources, you're missing out on some very important - and intriguing - information.

Both Dr. Earl Mindell and Mr. Rick Handel are the holders of numerous patents in the field of Health and Nutrition... both have been studying the field of natural sciences for well over 30 years... and both are thoroughly excited by the discoveries already confirmed from the study of this tiny berry.

Imagine -- a tiny berry that contains more beta carotene than CARROTS.

Picture this -- a berry that contains more Vitamin C than oranges!

Even more amazing -- a berry that contains germainium... unheard of in any fruit!

And totally incredible ... the wonderful side effect ... it makes you smile.

There are over 34 KNOWN HEALTH BENEFITS provided by this tiny berry which have already been proven in independent scientific studies. We're talking serious clinical studies here, folks - the real deal with control groups and labs and ...well, you get the picture, right?

As each discovery is made, and confirmed by modern science, the more scientists are striving to explore it further ...which has led to even more studies on the goji berry.

You can check out our feature article "The Amazing Goji Berry" which you can find at:

http://www.bestliquidvitamins.com/gojiberry.html

This revealing article referenced above contains an audio clip you can listen to which will tell you some astonishing areas of research currently ongoing. These studies aren't only taking place in North America. Scientists all over the world are currently investigating the properties -- and powers -- of this amazing fruit.

If it's so powerful, why haven't we heard about it before now?

Frankly, the berry has been known about for centuries in Ancient Asian medicine practices, but really only came to light in the western world a little over 10 years ago. And it was then that modern medicine began to take a closer look, ...but there were problems.

First, they had to find the original bloodline quoted in ancient texts. Not an easy task when there are over 40 different strains of the goji berry grown throughout the world. Not only that ...there was a problem with potency. Just like grapes will change based on the growing season (amount of sunlight, amount of rain, etc.) the same is true for the goji berry. It took some time to develop a method for finding the right berry with the full potency.

You can read the article referenced above for further details on how they managed to accomplish this.

Next, there was the difficulty in harvesting the berry. Even touching this fragile berry with human hands can erode some of its nutritional value.

It's no wonder that it has taken more than 10 years for Dr. Mindell and his team to come up with a process to:

- find the original authentic bloodline for the most potent goji berries,

- harvest the berry without losing nutrients in the process,

- process the berry in ancient ways to ensure the flavor and enhance the potency,

- and finally, bottle the juice in a way as to preserve the nutritional value.

More than 10 years to bring what is probably one of the most powerful antioxidant juices to the world, in addition to containing what scientists believe to be the most nutritionally dense food on our planet in the form of a liquid to get the full phytonutrient effects.

Did you know that there are 2 pounds of berries in every single bottle of Himalayan Goji™ Juice?

Yes, Himalayan Goji™ Juice is 100% juice!

... unlike many other products out there that contain mostly water and yet are sold as a juice ...

Can you get the same effects and expect the same results from dried goji raisins? Absolutely not! (And yet the raisins are extremely expensive to buy.)

The key secrets to the power of the original goji berry (of the strain lycium barbarum), and the juice made from it, is in the bioactive polysaccharides.

The polysaccharides scientists have found in the original bloodline for the goji berry are different and more active than anything they have ever seen before!

Four primary bioactive polysaccharides were discovered in Lycium barbarum that the scientists have never before encountered in any of the world's tens of thousands of botanical species.

Hence, they named the new polysaccharides after the latin name for the berry using the short form ...and they are called LBP1, LBP2, LBP3 and LBP4.

Permit me to quote an excerpt from the book "Goji, The Mimalayan Health Secret" which may explain more about this amazing discovery and why I'm telling you it is VERY important:

"LBP polysaccharides proved to be glycoconjugates, meaning that they are exceptional sources of the essential cell sugars -- rhamnose, xylose, glucose, mannose, arabinose and galactose -- that are necessary for proper immune function and intercellular communication. In fact, goji may be the richest source of glyconutrients yet found!"

"Research strongly suggests that the goji's unique polysaccharides work in the body by serving as directors and carriers of the instructions that cells use to communicate with each other. In this way, it can be said that the goji's LBP polysaccharides are 'master molecules' by virtue of their ability to command and control many of the body's most important biochemical defense systems."

I'm no scientist, and I don't pretend to be one, but I can tell you this --- this news excites me! Even a layman can understand how important the body's defense system is in this world, and in this day and age, with all of the elements, toxins, and viruses we are facing.

There is so much more I'd love to share with you about this exciting discovery, but I'm running out of space in this article. I strongly recommend you check out the full article referenced above and you will quickly see why we knew we definitely had to add the amazing Himalayan Goji™ Juice to our line-up of products the minute we found out about it.

Live long - stay healthy - and I'll see you next week with another Feature Article.

Are You Into Heavy Weight-Lifting?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

Men who lift weights often like to lift as much as they can. For some, it's a matter of pride - "hey, I can bench-press 130, how about you?" For others, it's a tried-and-true training regimen, the way they've worked out since adolescence.

We've known for a long time that this kind of weight lifting increases your risk of tearing muscles and tendons and injuring your joints. New research indicates that those who lift the heaviest weight they can handle are at a significantly higher risk of aortic rupture, which is fatal in 90 percent of people who incur it.

Correspondence in the Journal of the American Medical Association described commonalities between five patients, aged 19 to 53 years, who had aortic aneurisms. Heavy weightlifting and doing pushups were among the activities believed to precipitate these aneurisms. Pre-existing weakness in the arterial wall, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure contribute, but none of the five patients had been diagnosed with arterial wall weakness, and did not know of this important risk factor.

Is Low-Carb Dieting For You?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

In a recent article by Dr. Mindell in "The Mindell Report" he is quoted saying...

"Folks, carbohydrates aren't the enemy any more than fat or protein. There are carbohydrates that are good, and carbs that aren't so good. The research has shown us that there is no single dietary approach that will work for every person who wishes to lose weight. Although a low-carb regimen helps take weight off more quickly, it's no better at keeping it off than a more balanced approach."

For those of you suffering from the 'yo-yo' effects of carb dieting, it is good to know that low carb dieting isn't the ONLY way to take off -- and keep off -- those excess pounds.

Here's a few tips and suggestions from The Mindell Report:

"As is the case with most wildly hyped health solutions, a balanced approach is what works the best. One of the problems with very low-carb plans—generally the problem with any weight-loss plan—is that going off the low-carb wagon usually brings weight right back. Unless you're willing to stick with some version of low-carb eating for life, it's best not to go to low-carb extremes. Try a moderate version: overall low in calories, balanced protein and fat (healthy fats like olive oil, please), and with an overwhelming emphasis on whole foods. The weight might come off slower, but it's more likely to stay off if you eat in a way that you can maintain for life. Slow and steady wins the race."

"Instead of banishing carbs altogether, get familiar with the glycemic index of the foods you commonly eat. Try to stay below 50 whenever you can, and experiment with some new low-glycemic foods. One benefit of the low-carb craze is that lots of great recipes can be found on the Internet and in cookbooks."

"Some people find that low-glycemic eating has transformative effects on their moods. Foods high in refined carbohydrates and sugars raise levels of serotonin and beta-endorphin, and this has calming effects - but the calmness quickly dissipates when blood sugars crash, triggering a frantic search or more refined carbs and sugars. It appears that some people are genetically more sensitive to these effects of carbohydrates. This isn't exactly addiction, but it can feel like it when carb-sensitive people try to kick their habit. These people may benefit more than others from sticking to a low-glycemic-index regimen."

"Supplemental nutrients can go a long way towards helping you kick your refined carbohydrate habit. Look for a supplement that contains 200 mcg of the blood sugar - balancing nutrient chromium (as chromium dinicotinate glycinate) and 100 mcg of the insulin-mimicking mineral vanadium. Phaseolus vulgaris seed, gymnema sylvestre leaf, banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa), and momordica charantia are all helpful for easing sugar cravings and keeping blood sugars balanced."

Singing As An Exercise To Prevent Snoring?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

Here's a truly unique approach to reducing the volume of snoring.

A small study recently performed by Edward Ernst, M.D., Ph.D. - director of the Complementary Medicine Unit of the Peninsula Medical School at the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, England, reveals a novel way to deal with minor snoring (that may be major enough to cause marital troubles) -- and the solution is SINGING!

According to a recent article in The Mindell Report:

"A singing teacher had told Dr. Ernst that his students reported snoring less after taking singing lessons. Intrigued, the doctor put tape recorders in the bedrooms of 30 men and women and measured the volume and duration of their snoring. After four weeks of singing lessons and daily singing practice, the measurements were repeated, and the end result was decreased snoring volume and frequency in about two-thirds of the subjects."

"Vocal training improves the tone of the muscles of the soft palate, counteracting the sagging and weakening that causes the vibrations of snoring. So if you're a snorer, and you happen to be one of those folks who loves to sing in the shower and in the car but have never had actual vocal training, it might be time to sign up with your church choir or private voice lessons. Vocal training is also excellent for people with asthma or other respiratory issues, chronic sinus congestion, or who would like to be less shy!"

You may not be ready to cut that major record deal, but just think of the other health benefits you could be achieving by adding "singing" to your daily exercise routine.

Stay well ...and be happy!

Dangerous Levels Of PCBs In Farmed Salmon?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

Think the salmon you're eating is good for you? A study published in the journal Science in early 2004 may well change all of this. According to research led by David O. Carpenter and funded by the Pew Charitable Trust, the levels of toxic PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), dioxin, and other chemicals that cause cancer are several times higher in farmed salmon than in wild-caught salmon. This is due to the fact that farmed salmon are fed fishmeal that has been contaminated by these toxins, and it bioaccumulates in their bodies.

To be more precise, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines stipulate that fish should contain no more than 4 to 6 parts per billion (ppb) of PCBs. Farmed salmon can have as much as 30 ppb of PCBs. According to the EPA, more than a single eight-ounce portion of farmed salmon per month represents an unacceptable cancer risk because of toxin levels 4 to 8 times higher than in wild salmon.

Suggestion? Stick with wild-caught salmon. It costs more, but you can eat smaller portions.

Cinnamon Lovers Will Love This

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

For thousands of years, cinnamon has been used in cultures in the Middle East, Egypt, China, Malaysia, India, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.

In addition to its well-known use in foods and beverages, cinnamon is used in Chinese, Indian, and Western traditional medicine. There are many species of cinnamon but the medicinal bark is commonly derived from Chinese cinnamomum trees.

The first recorded use of cinnamon bark medicinally was in China as early as 2700 B.C. It has been used as a healing agent for stomach and digestive problems, rheumatism, and kidney ailments. Probably because of its antiseptic action, cinnamon oils are often used for soaps, lotions, and oral treatments such as toothpaste and mouthwash.

Evidence suggests that cinnamon may benefit blood sugar control by enhancing the activity of insulin. Test-tube studies have found that cinnamon can heighten insulin activity by more than three-fold. Other test-tube studies show that cinnamon may increase the uptake of glucose and improve insulin action as a result.

The results of animal research also support cinnamon's potential role in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. In one study, rats fed a high cholesterol diet along with cinnamate (a compound found in cinnamon bark) had lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Another animal study also found that cinnamon reliably and significantly lowered cholesterol levels.

This is exciting news for cinnamon lover's out there!

News On The Childhood Asthma Front

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

To further look into the connection between antioxidant nutrition and pediatric asthma, researcher Rachel M. Rubin and co-workers at Ithaca University's Division of Nutritional Science evaluated blood nutrient levels in just over 7,500 children aged 4 to 16.

They found that higher blood levels of vitamin C and beta-carotene offered significant protection against asthma.

Higher beta-carotene and vitamin C levels were associated with a roughly 10 percent reduction in asthma prevalence in children who were not exposed to cigarette smoke, and with a 40 percent reduction in kids who were exposed to smoke.

Higher selenium levels had a more pronounced effect: higher levels lent 10-20 percent reduction in asthma prevalence in kids not exposed to smoke, and reduction of 50 percent for those who were subjected to secondary smoke.

Based on this study, you will most likely agree, it just makes good sense to supplement children's diets with a high-quality multvitamin—especially if they have asthma.

Moussaka (a Greek casserole), Serves 6

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

For all our readers seeking to add the healthy antioxidant benefits of eggplant to their diet, here's an excellent recipe we found in The Mindell Report.

Moussaka (a Greek casserole), Serves 6

2 medium eggplants
2 teaspoons salt
1 pound lean ground beef
1 can (14.5 ounces) tomatoes, drained
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon oregano
dash cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
2 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2 eggs, slightly beaten

1. Slice eggplants in 1/2-inch slices. In a large kettle, boil eggplant slices 5 to 10 minutes, until tender. Drain in colander or on paper towels.

2. Sprinkle eggplant with 2 teaspoons of salt and place a layer of paper towels on top of the salted slices. Place a heavy casserole or bowl on top of eggplant, pressing down to squeeze out excess water. Arrange half of the eggplant slices in a 13x9x2-inch baking dish.

3. In a large skillet, brown ground beef; drain off excess fat. Add drained tomatoes, breaking up with a spoon. Add tomato sauce, garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper, oregano, and cinnamon. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Spread meat mixture over the eggplant.

4. In a medium saucepan, melt butter. Stir in flour; remove from heat. Gradually stir in milk; return to heat and cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Add shredded cheese and continue stirring until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.

5. Add a small portion of the mixture to the eggs, beating quickly, then return egg mixture to sauce in saucepan, whisking in quickly. Pour cheese sauce over the eggplant dish.

6. Bake at 400° for 30 minutes, or until topping is set. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Eggplant May Be A Powerful Antioxidant Plant

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

Recent research by Agricultural Research Service scientists John R. Stommel and Bruce D. Whitaker have found high concentrations of extremely powerful antioxidant phenolic acids in seven eggplant varieties.

Plants produce phenolics—which, like flavonoids, are part of a class of compounds called phenylpropanoids—to protect against oxidative stress and infection from bacteria or fungi. Eggplant contains very high concentrations of chlorogenic acid, which the study's authors call "among the most potent free-radical scavengers found in plant tissue." Chlorogenic acids have anti-mutagenic, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties, and help to prevent oxidative transformation of LDL cholesterol.

The Atkins Diet Controversy Is Still Raging On

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

Did you know... ?

According to a February 2004 article in Time magazine, some 17 million Americans have tried the Atkins diet over the last year.

One of the few "clear truths" about the controversial Atkins Diet at this point is that the diet works for weight loss in the short-term ... but its long-term adverse effects are just not known. Increased risk of heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and kidney failure aren't out of the question.

When it comes to diets and dieting, Dr. Earl Mindell states:

"Balance and moderation are your safest bets when it comes to weight loss and to good health. The extreme low-carb approach isn't really an improvement over the extreme low-fat approach. A balanced whole foods diet with lots of vegetables, high-quality protein from tofu, organic eggs, wild-caught deep-water fish, free-range poultry and other meats, fruit for dessert, and prudent amounts of whole grains is time-tested and risk-free. You might not drop pounds so rapidly, but you'll save yourself the stress of following the ups and downs of the low-carb wars."

Pricey New Blood Pressure Drugs May Not Be As Effective

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

As you already know, here at Best Liquid Vitamins we firmly believe everyone should take care of themselves properly with a proper diet plus daily exercise... and have regular check-ups with their doctor.

When it comes to high blood pressure, your doctor should be your first source for assistance.

What's interesting to note is how drug makers "Continue To Push Pricey New Blood Pressure Drugs" on people when a much cheaper, and older, treatment exists.

"Over a year ago, a landmark study revealed that people who require drug treatment for hypertension are best off with the oldest and cheapest drugs sold for this purpose: diuretics. Data on prescribing trends show, however, that almost 80 percent of prescriptions for high blood pressure drugs are still written for calcium channel blockers and ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors, which are costlier and carry greater risk of adverse effects."

The excerpt above from a recent article on the subject goes further to state:

"If your blood pressure doesn't respond to only a diuretic, keep in mind that there are plenty of generic ACE inhibitors and beta blockers out there that cost a fraction of what the newer name-brand versions do."

If your Doctor has recommended one of the more costly medications, you may want to ask him/her if he/she has read the Allhat study, which was published in December of 2002.

Meanwhile, here are some further suggestions from Dr. Mindell on the subject:

"A whole-foods diet and stress control, along with a high-quality multivitamin/mineral that contains plenty of calcium and magnesium (1,000 mg and 400 mg, respectively), plus daily exercise, are instrumental for good blood pressure control."

Don't Put Vaseline Or Butter On Burns

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Wednesday, May 26 2004

If you read Vaseline petroleum jelly's labeling, it states that you can smear it on diaper rashes, chapped skin, chapped lips, and minor burns.

A recent case study described in the British Medical Journal, however, contradicts this, telling the sad tale of a boy with superficial scalding on his back from an overly hot bath. His mother applied Vaseline to the burned areas. He ended up with an infection—because greasy, non-sterile substances like Vaseline and butter (a traditional remedy for burns) create terrific breeding grounds for bacteria.

A much better option is to keep vitamin E oil around.

Whenever someone needs first aid for a minor burn (one that has not raised blisters), take the following steps:

1. Immerse the burn in cool water to relieve pain.

2. Leave the burn open to the air to dry.

3. Smooth the vitamin E oil onto the burn, and do so repeatedly while the burn heals.

This remedy is particularly good for sunburn. It can be used for chapped lips or skin, and even for diaper rash.

(Diaper rash is often yeast-based. If the oil doesn't work, you can try spreading some yogurt on the rash, or mix some probiotic powder with water and applying that.)

If a burn raises blisters, it's best to simply dress the cleaned, dry burn with a sterile dressing without putting anything on it. Once the skin is intact again, you can add vitamin E oil to prevent scarring.
