Dangerous To Humans But Maybe A Savior To Squid?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, November 26 2004

Okay... this may not have much to do with nutrition, but it may have a lot to do with health and wellness ...and possibly a great deal to do with misunderstood purposes of some bacteria on our planet?

I found this article over at Scienceagogo.com and couldn't resist sharing it here:

~ copy ~

Scientists examining the Hawaiian bobtail squid have found that the same bacterial toxin that causes whooping cough and gonorrhea in humans is responsible for the development of an important organ in the squid. The toxin - known as tracheal cytotoxin - was found to spur the development of a light-producing organ that acts as a sort of "Klingon cloaking device," mimicking starlight to confuse hungry predators lurking in the depths.

In humans, the same toxic molecule, produced by different species of bacteria, causes massive tissue damage in the lungs in the case of whooping cough and in the fallopian tubes in the case of gonorrhea. "The surprise of this study is that the molecules used to signal development of the organ in the squid are the same that signal for pathogenesis in the case of whooping cough or gonorrhea," said University of Wisconsin-Madison researcher Margaret McFall-Ngai.

New Study Suggests Poor Nutrition Leads To Low IQ

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, November 26 2004

A new study has been released that parents of young children should be made aware of... it links nutrition and malnutrition to potential problems for children later in life.

Adrian Raine, co-author of a recent study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry says... "Poor nutrition, characterized by zinc, iron, vitamin B and protein deficiencies, leads to low IQ, which leads to later antisocial behavior," he went on to state... "These are all nutrients linked to brain development."

Researchers also found that the more indicators of malnutrition there were, the greater the antisocial behavior. "There's more to antisocial behavior than nutrition, but we argue that it is an important missing link," Raine said. "Biology is not destiny. We can change the biological disposition to antisocial and aggressive behavior."

"These are the first findings to show that malnutrition in the early postnatal years is associated with behavior problems through age 17," said Jianghong Liu, lead author of the study.

"Identifying the early risk factors for this behavior in childhood and adolescence is an important first step for developing successful prevention programs for adult violence," she said.

New Study On How Much Food Gets Thrown Away

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, November 26 2004

According to a recent article on Scienceagogo.com, Timothy W. Jones, an anthropologist at the University of Arizona, has released a new study that indicates that on average, households waste 14% of their food purchases.

Fifteen percent of that includes products still within their expiration date but never opened. Jones estimates an average family of four currently tosses out $590 per year in meat, fruits, vegetables and grain products. Nationwide, he says, household food waste alone adds up to $43 billion, making it a serious economic problem.

The article also goes on to state:

"Cutting food waste would also go a long way toward reducing serious environmental problems. Jones estimates that reducing food waste by half could reduce adverse environmental impacts by 25 percent through reduced landfill use, soil depletion and applications of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides."

One more good reason to use up those leftovers!

Is It Unique To Live To Be 100 Years Old?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, November 26 2004

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, most of us can anticipate an average lifespan of just 76.9 years.

That's not very reassuring when you think about it. Even worse... for many people, a good number of those years may not be spent in prime health.

The National Health Interview Survey found 20% of people between the ages of 55 and 64 to be limited in the ability to handle even basic personal care needs such as bathing or dressing.

By ages 65 to 74, fully one-third of us may be impaired in our ability to walk, to remember, or to perform simple household chores. By age 75, nearly half of us will require some outside assistance.

Oddly enough, there are some areas in the world where living to be 100 years old is not uncommon.

More importantly, these people's lives are not merely long; they are also filled with abundant health and happiness.

For example, a group of researchers from the National Science Institute have discovered a region on the West Elbow Plateau of the Yellow River in Inner Mongolia where people have lived to be more than 120 years old.

Another area of interest... the residents of a tiny hamlet of Pinghan are exceptionally long-lived. The country has more than 74 centenarians (people 100 years and older) and 237 residents who have reached heir 90s.

According to Chen Jinchao, a surgeon who, for the past 10 years, has run the Guangxi Bama Long Life Research Institute, that's one of the highest per capita concentrations of old-timers in the world.

What's interesting to note is these small pockets of long living inhabitants share certain things common to all their diets. Their diets consist of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains ...and it is low in animal fats.

One other important fact... they consume regular daily servings of a tiny red fruit that just happens to be the world's most powerful anti-aging food: the goji berry!

Creator Of The Mediterranean Diet Dies

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, November 26 2004

An interesting article was reported on IntelliHealth this past week...

Ancel Keys, the University of Minnesota scientist who invented the K ration diet used by soldiers in World War II and who linked high cholesterol and fatty diets to heart disease, died at the age of 100.

He demonstrated, through a landmark study on the eating habits of Minnesota businessmen in the 1950s, how fatty diets were linked to heart attacks.

He also popularized the so-called Mediterranean diet, heavy on fruits and vegetables, light on fat and meat, with a touch of wine on the side.

The article went on to note: "Daughter Carrie D'Andrea of Bloomington said her father's attention to his diet was key to his longevity."

Two Daily Glasses of Milk May Up Ovarian Cancer Risk?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Thursday, November 18 2004

On Wednesday, November 17, 2004 a disturbing news item was released to the world via Reuters news service that may affect all women.

The article reported:

"Women drink two or more glasses of milk every day, or who have high amounts of older dairy products in their diet, appear to have a somewhat higher risk of one type of ovarian cancer, new research reports.

After following more than 60,000 women for an average of 13.5 years, Swedish researchers found that those who drank at least two glasses of milk every day or consumed at least four daily servings of dairy products were twice as likely to develop serous epithelial ovarian cancer as those who consumed less than two servings of dairy a day."

Dieters Should Get A Dog?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Thursday, November 18 2004

A new weight loss study was released this week on CNN ...and it provides some very unusual advice for dieters:

"A very large study has found a surprisingly strong link between the amount of shut-eye people get and their risk of becoming obese. Researchers also found that dog owners who dieted alongside their pets did slightly better than their dog-less counterparts."

Being a dog-lover myself, I know the calming effect of having a pet in the home... but I have to admit, it never once occurred to me that a dog could provide positive benefits for weight loss.

Don't forget, one of the many proven benefits of the Goji berry relate directly to weight management. Check out this clinical study.

If you're looking to lose some extra pounds (or inches) ...you might want to add Goji Juice to your daily diet, and perhaps a dog to your daily life.

You'll sleep better at night, and both are sure to add a smile to your days!

Using Mice To Help Fight Tobacco Addiction

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, November 5 2004

Not just any mice... genetically engineered mice are being used in research to study nicotine addiction.

According to a recent Reuters news article:

"Specific doorways into brain cells, called receptors, in the newly created mice could hold the key to nicotine addiction, they [U.S. Researchers] said."

We all are familiar with the health risks and dangers associated with smoking. Those who have tried to quit, and failed over the years, also know how hard it is to break from the habit and the cravings.

Hopefully, in the very near future, there will be an easier way.

Meanwhile, our advice to smokers out there ...if you are trying to quit, keep trying. Sooner or later, you will experience success!

The Story Behind The Vioxx Painkiller Incident

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, November 5 2004

In a recent news article released by Reuters a bold statement was declared regarding Merck & Co. Inc.'s Vioxx painkiller, taken by about 20 million Americans. The report declared:

"In a report for British medical journal The Lancet, researchers at the University of Berne said there was substantial evidence of the dangerous side effects of the drug by the end of 2000, but the mounting data was not analyzed properly."

At the time of the new report, Merck said in a statement it "was vigilant in monitoring and disclosing the cardiovascular safety of Vioxx and we absolutely disagree with any implication to the contrary." The company said it also disagrees with the conclusion that the drug should have been withdrawn several years ago.

However... the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently published a study estimating that Vioxx could have caused about 28,000 heart attacks or deaths since it was approved in 1999.

Merck's shares have slumped around 40 percent since the recall, and analysts estimate that it could face a bill of between $10 billion and $15 billion in litigation.

By the end of 2000, 52 heart attacks had occurred in 20,742 patients, Swiss researchers said. Of these, 41 were patients using Vioxx. The increased heart-attack risks became apparent in studies which were evaluated by external watchdogs.

What was even more alarming from their studies, was they found that patients who took Vioxx were at greater risk even after a few months, regardless of how much of the drug was taken.

If this information was already known in the year 2000, why is that the drug is only being recalled now in the year 2004?
