Trick Or Treat - Poison Candy?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Thursday, October 21 2004

With Halloween just around the corner and all our little ghosts and goblins getting ready for the main event, parents are also gearing up to step into the role of "candy police" ...or at least they should be.

But here's one source of potentially poison candy most parents may not know about...

According to a recent article --- "Sweet Candy, Bitter Poison" --- from Environmental Health Perspectives Online, certain candies may actually be causing lead poisoning in children.

"For years, scientists and health experts have traced child lead exposures to paint, leaded gasoline, soils, dust, lead-soldered cans and water pipes, and lead-glazed pottery. More recently, tests have shown that something as presumably innocuous as candies -- specifically certain ones made in Mexico -- may also be a source of toxic lead. Efforts are under way to combat this source of exposure, but success to date has varied."

The news release goes on to state:

"Since the early 1990s, the FDA, the California Department of Health Services, and independent laboratories have shown that certain Mexican candies contain sometimes hazardous levels of lead. Historically, some Mexican candy manufacturers have had two versions of their product lines: a cleaner version that meets FDA standards and is designed for export to the United States, and a dirtier -- and cheaper -- version for the Mexican market. The latter is imported via the "grey market" -- pickup trucks that drive shipments over the border to small, family-owned stores, particularly in California, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. These stores serve local Latinos, who enjoy the comfort and familiarity of candy from home.

The huge number of these small, informal shipments makes surveillance very difficult. Yet according to the San Diego-based nonprofit Environmental Health Coalition, California has traced 15% of its child lead poisoning cases to lead-contaminated candy--roughly the same percentage attributed to lead-based paint....

...California and FDA officials have also found lead in a common ingredient in many Mexican candies -- chili powder... ...One chili-coated candy tested by the FDA, Chaca Chaca, contained as much as 0.3-0.4 µg lead per gram of product, with one piece of candy alone weighing 35 grams."

Our recommendations to parents who have children participating in the "trick or treat" activity of collecting treats going door to door... be alert, be informed, and check all candy before your little ones dive into their bounty.

For those dishing out the treats this fall, why not choose some healthy alternatives? We've heard this is becoming a positive trend across the USA where people are giving out alternatives to candy, such as school supplies, healthy snack bars, small toys and party favors, in lieu of the traditional treat of candy.

In any case, we hope all have a safe and happy Halloween!

High Tech Health Care Using Television

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Monday, October 18 2004

Here is an interesting new trend in health care!

A recent news release at CNET described how Royal Philips Electronics is testing Motiva technology for chronically ill heart patients. The technology allows patients to use their home televisions to communicate with their care providers over a broadband connection.

"We envision this technology as a 'virtual house call' to promote daily contact with patients that have chronic disease and who would benefit from continuous monitoring and care," Dr. Jeffrey Kramer, a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and principal investigator for Cardiovascular Associates, said in a statement.

So far, the pilot program, in conjunction with the Cardiovascular Associates of the Delaware Valley and Comcast, has enrolled 60 patients who are now "connected" via their home television and a broadband network with their health care provider.

According to CNET, the system also allows family members living elsewhere to connect to the system and engage in two-way communication to provide moral support for the patient.

Click here to read the full story.

How does it work? "The virtual office visit is established by placing a set-top box in a patient's home with monitoring devices that measure vital signs such as weight and blood pressure."

Personally, I can see this becoming a large part of care giving in the future. We'll be watching this closely...

7 School Backpack Tips For Back Safety

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Sunday, October 17 2004

With our children back in school, in addition to good nutrition, it's important for us to consider another area of health ... namely their backs.

Many schools across the USA have reduced lockers (and/or removed them altogether) for safety reasons. As a result, there are plenty of backpacks appearing on the student scene.

Here are seven backpack tips from the California Chiropractic Association to help your children:

CCA Backpack Safety Checklist

1. Choose a backpack that is sturdy and correctly sized.

2. Purchase a backpack with padded shoulder straps.

3. The total weight of the loaded backpack should not exceed 15% of the child's weight.

4. Pack heavier items closest to the back.

5. Use both shoulder straps at all times.

6. Tighten shoulder straps until snug, but not tight.

7. For heavier loads, use a stabilizing waist strap.

What Are "Functional Foods" Really?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Sunday, October 17 2004

A lot of our visitors have seen Goji Juice on our website. It falls under the "functional foods" category as a whole fruit juice, cold processed, non-pasteurized, to preserve the berry's natural phytochemicals, including 4 phytochemicals totally unique to the lycium barbarum strain of goji berry in our juice.

(By the term unique I'm referring to the fact that these 4 polysaccharides are not found in any other food on earth! They're only found in the lycium barbarum strain of Goji berries.)

So what are "functional foods" ...really?

According to Aging Well...

"'Functional foods' is simply a convenient way to describe foods or their components which may provide a health benefit beyond basic nutrition. In other words, functional foods do more than meet your minimum daily requirements of nutrients..."

See Q & A on Functional Foods for the full article.

"The concept of functional foods is not entirely new, although it has evolved considerably over the years. In the early 1900s, food manufacturers in the United States began adding iodine to salt in an effort to prevent goiter, representing one of the first attempts at creating a functional component through fortification."

Basically, all foods are functional in that they provide nutrients however, "functional foods" tend to be those with health-promoting ingredients or natural components that have been found to have potential benefit in the body. They can include whole foods as well as fortified, enriched or enhanced foods and dietary supplements that have a beneficial effect on health.

Today, researchers have already identified hundreds of compounds with functional qualities, and they continue to make new discoveries surrounding the complex benefits of phytochemicals (also known as phytonutrients) in foods.

And science is really just getting started with many new discoveries on the way as researchers continue to explore this area of natural science in more detail.

Many - if not most - fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, and dairy and meat products contain several natural components that deliver benefits beyond basic nutrition, such as lycopene in tomatoes, omega-3 fatty acids in salmon or saponins in soy. Even tea and chocolate have been noted in some studies as possessing functional attributes.

In the lycium barbarum (goji) berry there are many beneficial phytochemicals, including Beta-Sitosterol, Cyperone, Solavetivone (a powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial compound), Physalin, Betaine, and more ...all of which have been discovered through modern research to be beneficial for the human body. (It's no wonder some experts believe the goji berry to be the most nutritionally dense food on our planet!)

Once you learn more about "functional beverages" and "functional foods" ...it brings an entirely new meaning to the term "eating well" ...agreed?

Balance Exercises from Aging Well

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Sunday, October 17 2004

I found this great exercise information over at New York's online "Aging Well" website that I wanted to share with all of our elderly visitors here at Best Liquid Vitamins.

"Each year, U.S. hospitals have 300,000 admissions for broken hips, and falling is often the cause of those fractures. Balance exercises can help you stay independent by helping you avoid the disability -- often permanent -- that may result from falling."

On their website they have 5 excellent --- and very easy --- exercises perfect for improving balance ...designed specifically for the elderly, including:

- plantar flexion,
- hip flexion,
- hip extension,
- knee flexion,
- and side leg raise.

Each exercise has an image to show you how best to do them.

You can find the information, and the directions, at:

Flu Vaccine - Why The Shortage?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Sunday, October 17 2004

By now you have probably already heard about it on the news, or through word of mouth... the flu vaccine shortage has hit the headlines all across the USA.

How did it happen? Where did it start?

There were only two suppliers for the vaccine, California-based Chiron Corp. and Pennsylvania-based Aventis Pasteur.

Chiron Corp. stopped its entire program after regulators shut down its facility earlier this month because of a bacterial contamination. That's 48 million doses, nearly half of which was to be manufactured for the United States for this flu season, left everyone with a major lack of supply.

Any of the distributors (and their customers) who ordered from Chiron this year was out of luck.

According to a recent article in Newsday.com:

"The good news is that Aventis still has vaccine that has yet to be distributed -- about 22.4 million doses as of early last week. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which usually has little to do with the chain of supply and has no enforcement power, has stepped in to help ensure that those doses go to those who need it most -- the very old, the very young and those with certain other medical conditions. The agency is taking steps to map where the vaccine already has been distributed and where the next batches need to go."

How is the vaccine created?

According to Newsday...

"Work on the flu vaccine began in January, and production occurred through the spring, as the virus was injected into fertilized chicken eggs and later harvested and then inactivated, according to Aventis. An injection of the killed or inactive virus triggers an immune response intended to protect against infection by that virus. The final vaccine was produced and packaged by August and shipping began last month. The vaccine is transported quickly after it is made, then refrigerated upon arrival, according to the CDC. It is intended for use within the flu season."

It's been noted in other news stories that each year the flu season brings out a wide variety of flu strains, and the vaccines produced for each year may not help fight against newer strains.

Understanding how the vaccine is produced may give us all a better appreciation for the time it takes to make it and why, in this case, it isn't a simple matter of adding more manufacturers into the process to get a quick solution to the shortage problem.

We can all help out if we respect the government's urging to save the vaccine shots for those who do need it most... the very old, the very young and those with certain other medical conditions.

Personally, I'm already increasing my family's nutrition program ... taking my own steps to ensure we keep fit and stay healthy through the season.

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, October 1 2004

We're closing in on Halloween season with Jack'O'Lanterns about to be carved. Before you throw out those seeds, why not convert them into a tasty nutritious snack? Here's a quick recipe for you the whole family will enjoy:

* 1 quart water
* 2 Tablespoons salt
* 2 cups pumpkin seeds
* 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil or melted, unsalted butter

1. Preheat oven to 250 F.

2. Pick through seeds and remove any cut seeds. Remove as much of the stringy fibers as possible.

3. Bring the water and salt to a boil. Add the seeds and
boil for 10 minutes. Drain, spread on kitchen towel or paper towel and pat dry.

4. Place the seeds in a bowl and toss with oil or melted
butter.

5. Spread evenly on a large cookie sheet or roasting pan.

6. Place pan in a preheated oven and roast the seeds for 30
to 40 minutes. Stir about every 10 minutes, until crisp and
golden brown.

7. Cool the seeds, then shell and eat or pack in airtight
containers or zip closure bags and refrigerate until ready
to eat.

Enjoy!

Bio-diesel Fuel In Our Future?

-- Posted by kmyers001 on Friday, October 1 2004

We have a research article currently underway regarding alternative fuel sources (no, not body fuel, but fossel fuels ...for cars, trucks, and the like) and came across an interesting piece of research underway in Calgary, Alberta.

Here's a quote from the article:

“Since the BSE crisis hit Alberta, there has been a real push to create new uses for animal byproducts, such as tallow,” Dr. Bressler explains. The traditional treatment for tallow was to add it back to animal feed. Scientists and the public now question the food safety implications of this procedure, so new opportunities for these commodities need to be explored. Dr. Bressler is working on thermal processing of tallow through a biocatalytic process to something similar to bio-diesel fuel. “You have to always be looking ahead to see what could be applied and see what is economically competitive with the chemical process.”

For the full article, visit:

http://www.afns.ualberta.ca/Index.asp?page=Stories&stories=111

With the rising prices for gas and oil, I'm sure we'll be finding plenty more new research on the subject of natural alternatives.

We'll keep you posted on when our article will be posted here at Best Liquid Vitamins.
